The Ghost And The Machine is the project of Viennese musician Andreas Lechner – dark indie folk rock that sounds as though someone dimmed the lights in order to hear better. Trained in jazz guitar under Karl Ratzer, with stints at the Burgtheater and in silent-film scoring, Lechner writes songs between blues, folk and electronically sharpened sound; the band’s name is a nod to Arthur Koestler. Rolling Stone heard music as elegant as Leonard Cohen and as unsettling as Nick Cave; Kleine Zeitung described a taming of demons between Lou Reed and Mark Lanegan – “frighteningly beautiful”.
Sorrows – the current album
Sorrows (album, released 14 November 2025, Fullmax Recordings). Twelve songs on vinyl, 41:29 minutes, recorded in part on resonator guitars from the 1920s. Compositions: Andreas Lechner & Daniel Pepl. Sorrows – deliberately in the plural.
