Harry Pepl (1945–2005) is among the most influential jazz guitarists and composers Austria has produced. With the Pirchner-Pepl-JazzZwio he wrote a chapter of Austrian jazz history; his collaborators included figures such as Benny Goodman and Dave Holland. Le Monde called him a “giant of improvisation”.
As custodian and curator of his musical estate, Fullmax Recordings is making this body of work accessible again: we review, restore and release archive material – carefully edited and with the respect this legacy deserves. The starting point, marking what would have been his 80th birthday, was the “Pepl Project”: the album “Harry Pepl (tape) & The (Lonely) Single Swinger Band – Live”. Marking his 80th birthday: Pepl’s original tapes from the archive of his “real-time compositions” sound across multiple channels on stage, while Clemens Salesny (alto saxophone, bass clarinet), Martin Bayer (guitar), Andi Schreiber (violin) and Valentin Duit (drums) improvise live alongside them – a concert in which past and present merge.
