The Berlin daily junge Welt devotes a detailed review to “Gay Propaganda” in its arts pages. Eileen Heerdegen hears a mix of queer attitude, humour and political activism – “fresh, offbeat and shrill” – and dance-inducing eighties electropop, with lines drawn to Steve Strange’s “Fade to Grey”, the B-52s and, in “Gender Police”, even to Sparks.
The cover is read closely too: “so much elaborate tastelessness makes you curious” – and the fact that the pink field is a pink triangle, the marking for homosexual prisoners in the concentration camps, does not go unnoticed. Andrea Mautner is quoted at length, drawn by junge Welt from the profil interview: on visibility, on social background, and on why the word “lesbian” has to be said out loud – “If people stop saying it, at some point we will no longer exist.”
